(The BSIA begins a series of roadshows to promote its recently launched Security Systems Inspectorate. We report on their effectiveness…)
"The 'SSI Roadshow' has provided the opportunity for BSIA members, Insurance surveyors and CPOs to learn more about the objectives and workings of the new Inspectorate, as well as the quality assessment schedule for the security systems industry, which is based on British Standard 5750, that the Inspectorate will adopt as its yardstick in the assessment of companies. A working party comprising representatives from the British Standards Institute, BSIA, police, crime prevention officers, banks, building societies and the insurance world is currently at work on this schedule.
BSIA's chief executive, David Fletcher, declares that he is 'delighted by the interest that has been apparent around the country'and he reports widespread support for the new Inspectorate. Whilst acknowledging that a great deal of work still has to be done, he declares that 'the BSIA is now certain that we have sufficient backing to ensure that the SSI succeeds'."
Top training for the industry
(The MLA and an independent security company draft in the Oxford College of Further Education to design training courses to meet the needs of the industry with a specially designed questionnaire for potential students…)
"Providing that the necessary grants are available, Oxford College of Further Education have expressed an interest in designing and managing training courses for those involved in the Security Industry covering the supply, installation and servicing of mechanical and electrical locks/security devices.
Having had preliminary discussions with representatives of the Master Locksmiths Association and an Independent Security Company, it became clear that their first objective is to determine the training needs of the industry and your co-operation in completing and returning this questionnaire would be gratefully appreciated."
Up close and personal
(Continuing our series on CCD cameras, we take a look at the Frame Transfer type…)
"At present, the only sensors on the market which will allow operators to use CCD cameras at relatively low light levels without the need to resort to the use of IR filters is the Frame Transfer. The reason for this exclusivity lies in the internal construction of the chip itself.
Unlike the other main types of sensor, the Frame Transfer has an aluminium shield built into the body of the chip between the various internal sections. It is this shield which stops the IR interfering with the collected light signals which are wanted and hence allows the crisp pictures associated with these cameras.
This shield, in conjuction with the deep 'p' well, stops the ingress of extraneous infra red light and hence the interference."
A bridge too far
(We recounted a true story from South America…)
"In the town of Floridam Uruguay, thieves unbolted the 160-ft long iron bridge over the river Santa Lucia Chico and removed it overnight.
No-one is quite sure why or what they've done with it – but you've got to admire their nerve!"
