The National Home Improvement Council has backed the Chartered Institute of Housing’s call for a decent homes target for private sector housing.

The institute pointed out last month that about 520,000 private homes are in areas blighted by low demand (HT 20 June, page 10). Initiatives are needed to tackle this, it said, including lower VAT on modernisation materials and a return to discretionary grants for low-income homeowners.
