Tyco Integrated Systems recently completed the design and installation of a fully-integrated security management system for Boots The Chemists' impressive hq in Nottingham.

At the heart of the design is an advanced, PC-based Cambridge CCTV control system which controls 50 high-performance colour cameras, as well as access control and intercom systems covering all main entrances and key doorways.

Pre-set camera switching sequences and alarm-triggered camera views are two of the benefits open to Boots' in-house security team.

The CCTV set-up provides effective surveillance of perimeter areas, making use of high-performance colour cameras that can automatically switch to high sensitivity infrared vision for night-time operation.

Meantime, the networked access control system protects no less than 80 doors, using Cotag Granta proximity tags for secure entry. The door access system also alerts the security team – and automatically initiates video recording – of any unauthorised attempts to gain access to the building.

Two of the main entrances feature 'barrierless' optical turnstiles for high-speed, unimpeded access by authorised users – staff members simply present their proximity card when they pass through an infrared beam. If a valid proximity card is not detected, an alarm is triggered and camera recordings initiated. As part of the contract, Tyco has also equipped Boots' main site security control centre with S-VHS recording, switching and multiplexing systems, as well as state-of-the-art monitors.
