Estimation
Estimation was one of the founding members of the Building Services Trading Community, along with six leading contractors and two wholesalers. It was established to meet a recognised need to take cost out of the supply chain through use of IT. Purchases on the Estimation system are made electronically without human intervention. Building services procurement is characterised by many low value orders with high admin costs. Field trials have shown that savings on administration costs can exceed 50% when the scheme is fully implemented.

The group established a common protocol that would deal with the various types of information exchanged between organisations. Common message sets allow contractors' software to link directly to wholesalers' software, via a digital exchange.

WSP
WSP has developed a CD-Rom presentation which can model live any mechanical or electrical distribution system into a virtual reality computer matrix. Users can change mechanical and electrical components, creating different scenarios each time. The system allows the engineer to explain to clients more clearly the level of reliability and resilience of mechanical/electrical systems needed for their business compared to capital expenditure invested. Roberts & Partners
Roberts & Partners Information Directory – or RAPID – is a secure web site based on an extranet set up. This allows many organisations to log in to a private web site to manage, view, print, upload and download project information. The aim of RAPID is to give clients and design teams the ability to exchange information to a central secure location – within hours of a meeting. BuildOnline
ProjectsOnline is a secure, web-based collaboration tool which enables dispersed teams to work together. Users can track project status, manage project communication and documents. The software automatically creates an audit trail of all activity on the system. Roberts & Partners
www.rapository.com is the consultancy's web based system for managing Roberts & Partners' best practice information and documentation. All staff register on the system and can search for information on exemplar projects which should provide an excellent template for any new piece of work. There is a reward scheme for those who consistently submit and use the system to good effect.
