In a bid to further improve the training standards of the building services industry, JTL has taken part in a European initiative called Accumulated Knowledge and Skills (AKS).
The project has resulted in the development of a new self-assessment software package that measures the technical, non-technical and soft skills of staff.
Led by Norwegian training group ELBUS, AKS has garnered considerable interest from government organisations and employers across Europe. The package is designed to provide employers with greater knowledge of the ability of their staff and also to open up dialogue between the management and workforce.
Employees are required to fill in a simple matrix form (for the technical and non-technical elements) and a questionnaire (soft skills). These are logged on to a confidential database and the results measured against the skill-base requirements of the company. This identifies knowledge gaps that a company needs to address to meet its commercial aspirations.
Neil Cruickshank, JTL’s business development manager, says: “This was a great opportunity for JTL and employers alike, allowing us to draw upon the experiences of our partners in Europe and to exchange good practice. We hope this is the first of many projects of this nature.”
