The latest BSIA statistics suggest that, from January-June this year, there were a total of 319 CiT attacks in the UK, resulting in net losses of £6 million. During the same period at least 47 criminals have been arrested across the country for CiT-related attacks, with another 22 being convicted.
Fletcher told SMT: "There's a very high incidence of Cash-in-Transit attacks in the Capital, but due to excellent partnership work between the industry and the Metropolitan Police Flying Squad a number of large armed gangs have subsequently been caught and sentenced to longer jail terms."
The prison sentences meted out to those prosecuted this year amount to over 115 years behind bars, plus three life sentences.
In the north west of England at least 15 would-be thieves have been arrested and another eight convicted in the 'survey' period, including the sentencing of one man to 12 years' imprisonment for two separate armed robberies in Liverpool. In the north east, at least 11 men have been arrested and a further 11 convicted (including two men involved in a ram raid in Newcastle who were subsequently sentenced to 15 years in prison).
