But where does that leave installers? The answer is, quite often, mystified and fearful of the new techniques required to handle network security.
This need to be the case. As people in the IT industry acknowledge, security installers are well placed to take advantage of internet protocol CCTV ... and will have less trouble becoming proficient in this field than an IT person who wants to acquire security expertise.
CCTV engineers already know about the difficult bits …cameras, lenses, focal lengths, monitoring techniques … and to most people the internet is now an everyday concept.
A number of manufacturers are offering training connected to their products and private training providers are aware that there is a need to cover this technology. Here we detail two of the latest offered from ATM and Tavcom. Manufacturers/ raining providers ... If you're offering courses you think readers will be interested in let us know about them.
CCTV viewed via the internet
ATM HAS ANNOUNCED THE LAUNCH OF ITS LookC Pro ix web-server system that allows real time high res images from up to 16 cameras per server to be viewed by accessing any internet browser at any time, in any place, using any device. LookC allows up to four individual video clips to be displayed at any time in a standard Windows interface, allowing pictures to be sent anywhere in the world via the internet.
The web-server can be connected to an local area network to interface with a n organisations standard applications and if more than 16 cameras are required additional servers can be added.
While LookC monitors premises, video clips are transmitted via the Internet by phone or any web-enabled device. Events can be viewed in real time or clips or preceding events can be displayed in high res format and stored as Jpeg images. By comparing the real time images with previous clips a security breach can be detected.
The company is carrying out training at the purpose designed training facility at Irving House, Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne. (To see the premises live look in at http://lookc.atmltd.co.uk)
Training modules are:
Module 1 (Product Specific)
LookC Pro ix Product training:
Hardware; Location of the server, Physical Connections, Power Supply/UPS, Integration with sensors, communication links; Troubleshooting sensor, camera and power supply; Software; Hands on experience in using live camera views from floor plan for personnel tracking, single and 16 camera quad viewer; Review of archived events either trigger or date and time based; Configuring LookC, e-mail and sms text messages, transmission of images to central location, remote and local viewing options, scheduling configuration; Activation of external devices.
Typical duration: 4 hours for delegates from a non-IT background
Module 2 Network Communications for Remote Surveillance (Product Independent)
This module may not be necessary for those from an IT background with a broad understanding of TCP/IP and network implementation. This module is considered to be particularly useful for those from a non-IT background.
Course content: TCP/IP Protocols, TCP/IP configuration, routers and gateways, local area and wide area networks, Internet, point-to-point connectivity; Digital data transmission including PSTN, ISDN, ADSL, XDSL, Private Circuits such as Kilostream and Frame Relay; Troubleshooting communications
Typical duration: 4 hours for delegates from a non-IT background.
Module 3
CCTV Overview (non product specific)
This course is aimed at those who wish to look at the key aspects in surveying a site for CCTV and specifying the most appropriate solution.

Tavcom Training, winner of the Best Training Initiative in the Security Excellence Awards 2001, has a three-day course on Installing Computer and Networked Security Systems.
This course is "strongly biased" towards CCTV, access control, intruder alarms and integrated systems and will provide delegates with the practical skill to install, programme and maintain computers and networks.
There is an option to have it lead to a BTEC qualification.
Who should attend?: All those who install, maintain, specify and control network based security systems.
Course contents:
How computers work; Adding and installing computers into your PC; Formatting and partitioning; Understanding network protocols; Local and wide area networks; Sending CCTV pictures via TCP/IP; Access control and Integrated System Networking; Wiring and cabling; Adding networking cards; Windows and NT platforms; CAT5, Bluetooth and Firewalls; Sharing and moving data around a Network; Tips and tricks in Windows; Internet, Intranet and Extranet; Maintenance and fault finding; The course leading to a Tavcom Certificate is £579+VAT. Leading to a BTEC Award is £644 + VAT.
There is a residential option but the course can be conducted at any location worldwide.
Course dates: Feb 5-7; Apr 3-5; Jun 5-7; Aug 28-30; Oct 1-3; Dec16-18.
Tavcom is teaming up with network cabling experts CableNet Training to offer a new training package on the installation of integrated security systems. Taking the form of two back-to-back 5-day courses, delegates will learn the principles of copper and fibre optic cabling and gain the necessary knowledge to network systems.
The first course, Security Systems Cabling, will be presented by CableNet and the second course, Security Systems Installation, will be delivered by Tavcom. The cabling knowledge acquired during the first week will be put into practice installing integrated security systems incorporating CCTV, access control and intruder alarms.
Both courses have a 60 per cent theory/ 40 per cent practical content.
Completion of the 10-day programme will lead to BTEC qualification.
