the New HSE regulations for managing legionella in the workplace puts the emphasis on the control of legionella, rather than just on minimising risks. It also insists that a competent assessor carry out checks.
Speaking on legionella at a BIFM Midlands event in Birmingham last month, Nick Marr of water treatment specialist Aquazur said: 'Legionella control must be seen to be effective and the company must be able to prove this.'
The draft regulations abolish the rule that 300 litre tanks are exempt from legionella checks. They also say records must be maintained for five years and be reassessed every two. Hot and cold water services should be monitored monthly, and cooling towers must be checked at quarterly intervals. Proven control strategies in down-water services, such as chlorine dioxide and ionisation, have also been approved.
