Legionnaires' disease: the control of legionella bacteria in water systems is a substantially revised Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) and guidance published by the Health and Safety Commission.
This latest guide replaces the 1995 ACoP, the technical guidance HSG70 and the hot and cold water systems supplement to the technical guide MISC 150.
The publication is updated with guidance on the requirement for getting competent advice, references to a voluntary code of conduct for the water treatment industry and advice on the duties upon suppliers of goods and services.
It also covers guidance for the quarterly sampling of cooling towers for legionella, together with advice on what action to take when legionella is detected in cooling systems.
The findings of a recent survey funded by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and others to assess the efficacy of new and alternative control strategies is also covered. The document outlines how control strategies for legionella can be used safely and effectively.
A leaflet aimed at employers who manage premises with hot/cold water services and/or cooling systems – Legionnaires' disease: a guide for employers IAC27 (rev2) – has been produced to accompany the ACoP and guidance.
