Leicester Housing Association has taken over 170 homes on the city’s Braunstone estate and plans to spend £6m on refurbishments.
The homes were transferred from Leicester council for the nominal fee of £1. Each will have around £25,000 spent on it.

Residents will have a choice of styles and colours for new decorations and fittings, plus a selection of landscaping options for gardens.

LHA and contractor Newlife Regeneration will offer training and employment to 64 local people as part of the programme.

Tenants voted in favour of transfer to LHA and New Deal for the Communities body Braunstone Community Association last year.

But the community association has seen its share of difficulties, recently suspending chief executive Tim Slack and pledging to review its management (HT 26 September, page 13).
