Victims of antisocial behaviour should take part in the vetting of new tenants, a Labour MP has argued

Introducing a private members bill in Parliament last week, Stephen McCabe said vetting was needed because tenants evicted after a long battle were being rehoused a few doors or streets from neighbours who testified against them.

McCabe called for compulsory vetting of tenants to be imposed on all landlords, since many tenants evicted for antisocial behaviour are able to return to the scene of their misbehaviour by becoming tenants in privately owned ex-council homes.

The MP’s Tenant Obligations and Vetting Arrangements Bill would force tenants to maintain their property and garden, not to put out rubbish that attracts vermin, and refrain from damaging neighbours’ property.

The bill received its first reading unopposed but stands no chance of becoming law because of a lack of parliamentary time.
