SIR – Your Editorial Leader in the November edition of Security Management Today (‘Leading by example’,) struck, if I may say so, exactly the right note about where we are with regulation and licensing, while also offering timely recognition of the enormous contribution that John Saunders has made as chief executive of the Regulator.
Nothing is ever 100% perfect, but a brief look at the history of the relationships between other regulators and those they seek to regulate will surely serve to reassure people in our industry that, imperfect as it may have been, there are huge achievements upon which we can now build the future of the private security industry and its personnel.
I would like to take this opportunity to add my own tribute to John Saunders, not least because of the way in which he has been prepared to engage with the British Security Industry Association (and the industry at large) in a bid to ensure the greatest possible chance of success for what was, by any measure, a huge change management undertaking.
We can only hope that when his replacement is being chosen, John’s hugely pragmatic, thoughtful and practical approach to business will feature strongly in the minds of those making what is a crucial appointment.
