Council housing staff are being encouraged to become “ambassadors for local democracy” in a campaign to boost the profile of local government.
The drive is one of the Local Government Association’s six policy objectives for 2003/04. LGA director of strategy Phil Swann said: “We want housing staff to spread the word that local democracy matters. People like the services, but there isn’t the same satisfaction with the democratic process.”

The LGA will work with unions and professional bodies to provide a better understanding of how local government works. It wants councils to develop media strategies and plans a “rapid rebuttal” unit to counter bad press. The team will also look at the potential usefulness of a branding campaign to establish a common image for all councils.
