In readiness for door staff licensing in March, the Security Industry Authority (SIA) has issued a helpful booklet entitled 'The SIA and Licensing: Licensing Door Supervisors' which explains who needs a licence and how those licenses may be obtained.
Although it concentrates on door staff, the SIA is keen to point out that other sectors in the private security industry will be interested in the competency criteria and information on the various criminality checking procedures.

Crucially, the booklet also contains details of the necessary training that's required for door supervisors. Those details were unveiled in London last December by 'The Consortium' (ie the awarding bodies of the British Institute of Inn Keeping – BIIAB, City & Guilds and NFCE), whereby their qualification – the Level 2 National Certificate for Door Supervisors – will meet all of the training requirements laid down by the SIA.

The new qualification will teach door staff conflict management, body language and voice control techniques, encouraging them to be more approachable.

The Security Industry Authority estimates that there are up to 120,000 door supervisors working across the UK security industry in bars, clubs, concert halls, restaurants, hotels and galleries.
