Fewer than 700 of the estimated tens of thousands of CCTV operators in the UK have applied to obtain a licence from the Security Industry Authority, despite the deadline being less than six months away, says industry trainer, SOE Academy.
The company believes the deadline has been ignored and that there is now insufficient training capacity for it to be met .Regulations state that contract staff monitoring CCTV public space surveillance must receive appropriate training and a licence by 20 March 2006.
SOE’s head of training Bob Tonkins said: "There are more than four million CCTV cameras in the UK and estimates of the numbers of operators who require licensing vary from 8,000 to as many as 56,000.”
