London has seven times as much cash to spend on housing than have Liverpool and the North, according to Richard Kemp, Liverpool councillor for housing.
He said that following the comprehensive spending review there was an unfair bias towards the capital and the South-east, despite the fact that there are too many people in the South-east and not enough people in the North.

He said: “ We get so many students here in Liverpool who say that in the long term, they would like to move up, but there aren’t any jobs.”

Kemp said spending money on better regional polices would help areas in the North tackle economic issues. He said: “The government has already said that it is allocating £1.2bn for London and the South-east through the spending review.

“But here in the north we have to wait until September to find out what money will be available for us from the market renewal fund.

“It shows the imbalance. They can come up with the large figures [for the South] but we haven’t been told what we will get.”
