Newcastle council’s new Liberal Democrat administration is to use a neighbourhood management strategy pioneered by party colleagues in Liverpool.
Liberal Democrat councillors want to launch a scheme based on the Include project, which started up in Liverpool in 2001.
They have discussed the proposal with Richard Kemp, former executive member for housing at Liverpool council and one of Include’s creators.
Include, which unites council workers, the private sector and voluntary organisations in a single body, has been credited with starting to turn around deprived areas such as Toxteth.
Greg Stone, cabinet member for regeneration at Newcastle, said: “We’re looking to set up a pilot on the model of Include for the west end of Newcastle.”
The proposal has yet to be adopted by the council but Stone is keen to set up the pilot.
