London tenants have been told to be on their guard against right-to-buy scams that will leave them out of pocket.
Lewisham Trading Standards and Lewisham Home Ownership in south-east London have teamed up to protect council tenants from operators charging high fees.

Other London boroughs are also understood to be investigating disreputable companies that make extravagant claims of the financial benefits of the right to buy.

Members of these firms have been known to impersonate council officers during their bids to con tenants out of cash.

Deputy mayor Gavin Moore said: “Some tenants have paid hundreds of pounds for a service that Lewisham Home Ownership Unit supplies free of charge.”

Trading Standards will look into any misleading claims.
