Lord Chapple of Hoxton, former leader of the electricians’ union, died on 20 October, aged 83.

A former communist turned free marketeer, Chapple was instrumental in setting up the Joint Industry Board for the Electrical Contracting Industry (JIB) in 1968, bringing together the union and employers at a time when industrial action was rife.

Chapple became general secretary of the electricians’ union, then the EETPU, in 1966 and held the post until 1984. He was TUC president in 1983 and was made a peer in 1985 under the Conservatives.
