An 87 per cent reduction in robbery at 41 retail premises in the Stockport area has followed the successful implementation of crime prevention initiative 'Raid-control'.
Alan Townsend, chairman of Raid-control and Crime Prevention Coordinator at the Metropolitan Police Flying Squad, said: "These results are extremely good news for retailers in the Stockport area and for all retailers that face the problem of commercial robbery. This type of crime can cripple a business, causing personal trauma to the staff involved, and often impacting negatively on the local community.
"Our ultimate objective is to establish Raid-control as the acknowledged best practice response to commercial robbery and as the recommended preventative measure for premises at high risk of commercial robbery.
Raid-control has also presented its annual awards to four individuals who have made a significant contribution to its success.
The winners were Michael Hodge (Award for Outstanding Achievement in Promoting Raid-control), Digby Ram (Award for Outstanding Achievement in Promoting Raid-control), and Marie Brown and Rachel Fielding (Award for Outstanding Achievement in Implementing raid-control).
