The extension of the site into an adjacent building separated by an access road posed potential problems and time delays with the cabling installation. The original plan involved the use of a leased line and high-speed modems to establish voice and data links via a local exchange, however impedance obstacles in the loop ruled this out.
P&P Installations selected the wireless data link supplied by Wadsworth Electronics. The solution is based on licence-free Cablefree technology. Cablefree uses laser transceivers to establish a line-of-sight optical link capable of supporting 10/100 Base-T and a simultaneous E1 (2·048 Mbps) telephony link capable of supporting up to 30 simultaneous phone conversations. Cablefree transceivers were mounted on the two buildings and the line-of-sight link optimised in only 20 minutes using an audio-based alignment tool.
