“A manager is not managing, unless he’s managing change”. This phrase was said to me by a much respected former employer, his meaning being that a manager should continually strive for improvement and progress within the area in which he directs. With the sub title of - Thinking critically about Security , this book contains many ideas for change and development and in my opinion lives up to it’s stated aim to “strike sparks and e ncourage critical thinking”.
The book is composed of 39 short articles, each of which have been written by a security professional, with the intention to be both provocative and informative. The works are provocative through being questioning or challenging of current practice and thought. The articles are informative as they cover a wide ranging field of security management topics and specialisms and include intelligent suggested solutions.
For example, one chapter describes the position with CCTV, that despite the number of CCTV success stories, most of us know that there are far too many poorly planned and inadequately managed systems in operation. Criminals are aware of this situation, many of us, the managers, installers and suppliers know of this problem but the practice continues and goes chiefly un-addressed.
Other chapters cover the subjects of: Crime Prevention, Fire prevention, Investigations, Retail Loss Prevention, Security Personnel and Industrial Espionage. Although the majority of the article contributors are based in Canada, this does not devalue the books impact from being an inspiring and beneficial read.
