A foundation to support campaigners for social justice has been launched in memory of Dame Sheila McKechnie, the former national director of homelessness charity Shelter.
From June, the Sheila McKechnie Foundation will begin an annual programme offering 10 campaigners a year of study.
Jessica Morris, chair of the foundation, said the group’s aim was to nurture the next generation of campaigners. To become a “McKechnie fellow”, campaigners will need to demonstrate they have an effective message that will benefit society.
Housing-related issues will be one of the foundation’s 10 categories.
McKechnie worked as Shelter’s director from 1985 to 1994 before joining the Consumer Association.
She died last year after a long fight against cancer.
