The housing arm of Mencap has become the first major UK charity to issue financial bonds.
Golden Lane Housing, a subsidiary of Mencap, is to issue £4m of bonds with ethical bank Triodos.

The money raised will be used to buy homes for people with learning disabilities.

Mencap research has evealed that about 29,000 such people live with an elderly parent but only one in four councils have started to plan for their care when the parent is unable to look after them.

Mencap chairman Brian Baldock said: “The bond issue is designed to address a potentially disastrous housing shortfall.”
