Yet another market analysis (the latest published by Plimsoll) says the UK intruder alarms systems market is set to grow at a rate of 4.4% in 2002.
However, according to the analysis, growth will be confined to some companies only. An earlier prediction by Plimsoll revealed that 542 job losses would be experienced by the alarms industry (see January, p8).

The new analysis confirms the earlier prediction with studies of the largest 271 companies revealing almost a third of the industry could lose 13.8% of sales on average this year. More than half of these companies are said to have seen profits fall in 2001, with almost 27% of loss makers. Despite these factors, very few companies reduced staff and only 52% made attempts to reduce their asset base.

Nevertheless, 53 companies had a share of the 14.0% growth last year. Some 13 companies individually increased sales by a minimum of 30.3%.

The seven highest achievers make up part of the largest 50 companies in the alarms industry. They include Orbis Property Protection, Response Electronics, Reliance High Tech, Wright Security, Kingfisher Security, Crimecure Security Systems and Trade Security Systems.

Companies will experience more competitive pressure as they struggle to secure market share, says Plimsoll. David Pattison, senior analyst, said: "Every director must factor in competitive behaviour into their own company thinking."
