Camden Council’s efforts to meet the decent homes standard have been dealt another blow after the Treasury pulled the plug on a private finance initiative to revamp Chalcots estate in north London.
Tenants rejected an arm’s-length management organisation last January.
Councillor Raj Chada, Camden’s executive member for housing, said he was shocked by the Treasury decision. “We were led to believe right up until this point that the scheme would receive funding and go ahead.”
An ODPM spokesman said: “There are concerns about the increase in the scheme price since it was approved [in 2000]. It did not represent value for money.”
