More than two-thirds of MPs believe quality housing provision is the key issue for Britain’s black and minority-ethnic communities, a survey by a London social landlord has found.
When asked by Presentation Housing Association, 68% of 154 MPs said housing was the top priority.
But there were significant differences between the two main political parties: 78% of Labour MPs agreed, compared to only 43% of Conservatives.
Mohni Gujral, Presentation’s chief executive, said: “The provision of good quality housing for all … will be a key issue for minority-ethnic voters and must be a priority for the next government.”
Adam Sampson, chief executive of homelessness charity Shelter, said: “The hidden housing crisis in Britain is having an immensely damaging effect on BME communities … More affordable housing is desperately needed to reduce the large number of minority-ethnic households in unfit conditions.”
