The government should set up a cabinet committee to lead work on the Northern growth corridors, the director of the North Staffordshire pathfinder has said.
Brendan Nevin said the committee should wrest control of the project from the Northern regional development agencies, which he does not consider powerful enough.

It could operate on the same lines as committee Misc 22, which heads the work on the Thames Gateway. Misc 22 is chaired by Tony Blair.

Nevin said the growth corridor plan needed to be led by something "much more sophisticated" than the three Northern development agencies (HT 6 February, page 8).

He said: "It could be [led] by a cabinet committee that could follow things through at the highest level."

Max Steinberg, director of the East Lancashire pathfinder, said: "I would like to see how the initial work progresses and then see what mechanisms we can put in place to take this forward."

A spokesman for One North East, the development agency leading the work, said: "Government has committed to this project at the highest level and has appointed senior civil servants to work with the RDAs on this plan."
