With the arrival of Part P of the Building Regulations imminent, the ECA and NICEIC have jointly published the Electrical installers’ guide to the Building Regulations.
Designed to assist electrical contractors planning to self-certify that their work complies with the Regulations, and endorsed by the District Surveyors Association, the new guidance book is an authoratitive reference source for both domestic electrical installers and building control officers.
Part P is just one of the Building Regulations that domestic electrical installers will have to understand and meet. Competent persons must ensure that their work complies with the new electrical safety element and also with all other relevant and related Building Regulations.
NICEIC technical director, Mike Clark says: “Electrical installers will need to appreciate the requirements applying to building work that they carry out in connection with electrical work.”
The Electrical installers’ guide to the Building Regulations covers:
- Part A (Structure): the depth of chases in walls and the size and position of holes and notches in floor and roof joists;
- Part B (fire safety): provision of fire detection and alarm systems, fire resistance of penetrations through floor, walls and ceilings;
- Part C (site preparation and resistance to moisture): moisture resistance of penetrations through external walls;
- Part E (resistance to the passage of sound): penetrations through floors, walls and ceilings;
- Part F (ventilation): mechanical ventilation rates;
- Part L (conservation of fuel and power): energy efficient lighting;
- Part M (access to and use of buildings): heights of switches and socket outlets etc.
ECA head of external affairs, Stuart Burchell, extolled the virtues of the publication: “The electrical installers’ guide will be an invaluable aid to all members of competent person self-certification schemes.”
The guide is available to buy from the ECA membership department on 020 7313 4800.
