The London borough of Hillingdon has received its first CCTV surveillance vehicle as part of a ‘safer street’ initiative, in partnership with security firm ADT.
Jointly funded by the Metropolitan Police and the local authority, the vehicle has been kitted out with the latest surveillance equipment, and is one of 25 similar vehicles provided by ADT’s Specialist Vehicle Division across the UK.
“This high-visibility vehicle acts as much as a deterrent as it does a tool to physically apprehend criminals,” said Ian Major, core commercial sales manager at ADT’s North London branch. “It has two CCTV cameras on top, with monitors and recording equipment inside, and can transmit and download images back to local police stations that are vital for helping to manage crime-fighting operations.”
As well as filming criminal behaviour for use in court cases, the vehicle functions as a communications centre for the area police task force, quickly deploying police cars and vans to problem areas through its on-board broadcasting technology.
“This vehicle represents another tool in our armoury in the fight against crime,” said Richard Evans, crime prevention officer for Hillingdon metropolitan police.
“We will be taking it to hotspots in the borough to support existing projects against burglary and anti-social behaviour. Where the Met Police already have these vans deployed, they have had a notable impact on controlling crime.”
