In his presidential address, The supply chain to the profession Oughton said that the industry is experiencing recruitment difficulties now, and trends in education make it inevitable that the current shortfall will worsen rather than improve in the next decade.
He commented: "We need building services engineers and companies to play their part by taking the message out to schools and educational establishments in any way that they can." Oughton said the UK could learn from Hong Kong which is not experiencing these shortages of young engineers.
Doug Oughton joined Oscar Faber (now FaberMaunsell) in 1967, and has been a director since 1981.
He has served CIBSE for many years on various committees and councils. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and a Member of both the Institute of Energy and the Institute of Refrigeration.
He is also co-author of Heating and air conditioning of buildings, published by Faber & Kell.
