Chief executive Anu Vedi said: "The changes will reflect the larger and wider scope of the new organisation. Also, West Hampstead is not really a name to be associated with."
But a source at Genesis told Housing Today that even choosing a new name had been beset by problems.
"As far as we knew, until a month ago the new name was Beechwood. Then somebody did some checks and found that the name had already been used by someone else," he said.
Genesis declined to reveal the new name, saying that it would be made public "closer to the time".
The West Hampstead name became notorious within the sector when Housing Corporation confidentiality rules effectively forced it to hide the RSL's financial difficulties from Camden council.
