2:45PM Drivers Jonas and Davis Langdon to work on new home on the South Bank in time for the Olympics

A feasability study has begun looking at creating a new home for the British Film Institute. A team headed by consultant Drivers Jonas with QS Davis Langdon will complete the study next February.

A statement by the BFI said the study would be based on the working assumption that the institute would remain on the South Bank as part of the overall arts complex that also includes the Royal Festival Hall and the National Theatre. The new home is expected to include cinemas, a library, studios, access to the BFI archive, exhibition space, offices and retail and catering space. The BFI said it hoped to complete the new scheme by 2012.

Director of the BFI, Amanda Nevill, said: "Britain has one of the most vibrant film industries in the world and it is inconceivable that there is no national centre for its celebration. Film as a cultural activity is every bit as important as theatre, dance, music or fine art. A major international centre in London dedicated to film will have far-reaching economic, social and cultural benefits, not just to the local community but also nationally, internationally and to the creative industries as a whole in Britain."
