The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds has opened a new visitor centre on the edge of the marshes at Rainham.

The building incorporates a reception area, education space, café and shop and provides views across the reserve for an anticipated 140 000 visitors a year. The environmental design was carried out by Max Fordham and includes a 28 kW Viessmann ground source heat pump drawing heat energy from six, 80 m boreholes.
