St Mary’s hospital in Paddington has confirmed it has started working on new plans to redevelop the hospital after the collapse of a £1bn PFI planned for the area last month.
A spokesperson for the hospital confirmed that plans were being initially considered but would not comment on the cost of the scheme. A source close to the team claimed it could cost between £150m-£300m.
The spokesperson said: “It’s very embryonic at the moment. We certainly couldn’t put a price on it.”
The spokesperson said that team members working on the previous Paddington Health Campus project would be working on the new plans. This include long-time planner Peter McGinty.
A source close to the Trust added that work was urgently required at St Marys. The source said: “It’s in pretty bad condition right now.”
The move follows the decision by the North West London Strategic Health Authority to end the scheme, which was proposed by St Mary’s NHS Trust, the Royal Brompton & Harefield Trust, and Imperial College.
A report submitted to the board meeting last month acknowledged that attempts at striking a land deal for the scheme late last year were flawed. The report said: “The continuation of the project at this stage is not in the best interests of the public. With the time and cost constraints that now pertain to the land transactions, it is unlikely that maximum value for money can be obtained at this stage.”
