The New Year's honours list included awards for a host of local government and housing professionals and campaigners.
Among the most notable was a knighthood awarded to Sandy Bruce-Lockhart, Kent council leader. He has a reputation as one of the country's most outspoken commentators on social housing after outlining plans to reduce Kent's benefits bill in exchange for £24m from the Treasury (HT 17 October 2002, page 10).

Other housing figures honoured for their work included Leroy Phillips, chair of Hexagon Housing Association and a member of Housing Today's editorial advisory board, who received an OBE. Victoria Stark, chief executive of Look Ahead Housing and Care, received a CBE for her service to homeless people in London, while Anne Kennedy was awarded an MBE for similar work in Glasgow.

Howard Bernstein, the chief executive of Manchester council who helped regenerate the city centre, was knighted, as was Yorkshire Forward chairman Graham Hall. Sir Graham was praised for his work in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Geoff Alltimes, director of social services at Hammersmith & Fulham council, received a CBE for services to social care. Derrick Bancroft Anderson, chief executive of Wolverhampton city council, received a CBE for services to local government. Aberdeen council leader Leonard Ironside and Local Government Association management director Joan Jones won CBEs for their local government work.

Former Scottish Homes chairman Professor John Ward was knighted.

Other MBE recipients included Patrick Larner, chairman of Hightown Praetorian Housing Association; Susan McDonald, chairwoman of Cernach Housing Association; William Millett, chairman of Mackwest Tenant's Association, for services to the community; and Mary Reid, secretary of Antonine Housing Cooperative, for services to housing and the tenants' movement. Mary Burke, community and tenant representative at Notting Hill Trust and a member of the National Housing Federation's national council, won an MBE for services to social housing.

Representatives of the Foyer Federation gained two honours: chair Lady Winifred Tumim received a CBE for services to the voluntary sector and chief executive Carolyn Hayman received an OBE.

There were OBEs for John Sienkiewicz, head of urban policy at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's Thames Gateway Unit, and for Fold Housing Association chief executive Brian Coulter. Carole Round, a local housing manager of the Frankley Estate in Birmingham, received an MBE.
