GTBB joint venture awarded rail electrification deal for West Coast Mainline.
Carillion and Balfour Beatty’s joint venture GTBB has been awarded a £110m contract for rail electrification on the West Coast Mainline between London and Glasgow.
The contract, awarded by Network Rail, is to modernise the overhead line equipment and power distribution infrastructure on Britain’s busiest rail route. GTBB will deliver 13 feeder stations and 620 miles of along-track, high-voltage feeder to enable faster and heavier traffic on the line.
Balfour Beatty Chief Executive, Ian Tyler, said the contract “further underpins Balfour Beatty's position as the UK's pre-eminent fixed rail infrastructure contractor,” while John McDonough, his counterpart at Carillion, said it “reflects Carillion's absolute focus on safety, quality and performance and reinforces our position as one of the UK's leading suppliers of rail infrastructure services.”
The award follows the successful completion by GTBB, working in partnership with Network Rail, of the first phase of the West Coast Mainline Overhead Line Electrification and Distribution upgrade.
