Soutwark Council grants outline planning permission for first phase of the British Land led development

Southwark Council has granted outline planning permission for the first phase of a £1.5bn development at Canada Water.

The approval follows an agreement signed in 2005 between the council and British Land-led joint venture BL/Canada Quays Ltd to work towards the comprehensive regeneration of Canada Water. The scheme is the second most ambitious in the borough after Elephant and Castle.

The first phase of the project covers a site close to Needleman Street and one adjacent to Surrey Quays Road. Plans for these sites include 800 homes, retail space and a new library.

Richard Thomas, of Southwark Council, said: “The council is committed to ensuring that the development of this area is sensitive and sustainable.”
