Jenny Jones hits out at premier league plans for HOK Sport's £525m stadium

The Green Party has reacted angrily to rumours that London Mayor Boris Johnson is considering plans to demolish the London 2012 Olympic Stadium and replace it with a premier league football club HQ. News emerged today that the London Development Agency (LDA) is thinking of junking plans to convert 80,000 Olympic seat venue into a 25,000 seat athletics stadium

Jenny Jones, GLA member, said that knocking down the £525m stadium would break the country’s environmental promise: "London's Olympic organisers have said they would minimise the energy which goes into providing materials for 2012 venues. Demolishing and rebuilding the biggest of those venues after the games makes a mockery of efforts to provide sustainable stadia.”

She continued: “"Londoners were promised a significant environmental and sporting legacy from these Games. But this already appears to be under threat from the need to cover costs."

A spokesman for the Mayor denied the rumours, saying: “The LDA has been looking at a range of options but the Mayor has no plans and is not aware of any plans to demolish the stadium. The Mayor … envisages a long term future for the Olympic stadium. Expensive facilities should not be built unless they have a viable future.”
