Seven architect teams have been shortlisted for the new £50m Glasgow School of Art building, perhaps the most eagerly awaited design contest this year

The list includes bidders from Spain, Ireland and the US. The shortlist comprises: Benson + Forsyth, Elder & Cannon, Francisco Mangado Architects, Grafton Architects, Hopkins, John McAslan + Partners with Nord Architects, and Steven Holl Architects with JM Architects.

The contest received 153 expressions of interest. Reports suggest Zaha Hadid, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and David Chipperfield threw their hats into the ring. The shortlist is mainly made up of architects known for their higher education work.
