An architectural team led by David Adjaye has won a competition to design the National Museum of African American History in Washington DC

The group comprising Adjaye Associates, The Freelon Group, Davis Brody Bond Aedas and SmithGroup beat a field of 21 to design the $500m (£334m) scheme on the National Mall near the Washington Monument. Construction is due to start in 2012.
