The Scottish regional secretary will takeover in October after gaining twice as many votes as runner-up Michael Dooley.

Alan Ritchie has been elected as the new general secreatry of construction union UCATT after seeing off rival candiadate Michael Dooley by a two to one majority.

The Scottish regional secretary will take up his post in October when current general secretary George Brumwell steps down after 13 years in charge.

Ritchie polled over 8,000 votes compared to the 4,000 picked up by London regional organiser Dooley.

The result was delivered this afternoon at a conference of full-time officials being held in Doncaster.

Brumwell will continue as chairman of the industry card scheme CSCS.
