AMEC will complete its prime-contracting pilot project for the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Estates six weeks ahead of schedule, according to its latest forecast.

Amec saved time on the project by starting the piling package seven weeks early and installing the steel frame nine weeks before it was planned in the original programme. This involved bringing in specialist contractors earlier than usual to carry out detailed design and plannning, said Amec.

The project is a £10m physical recreation centre at Aldershot, Hampshire. It involves construction of a 50 m pool, a sports hall, squash courts, fitness suite and changing rooms, and is part of the Building Down Barriers initiative run by Defence Estates, the DETR, Amec and Laing.
