Singer says design is a “dogs dinner of crap concrete”

Singer Annie Lennox has slammed plans for a £140m development of Aberdeen’s city gardens.

The gardens, which have been designed by US architect Diller, Scofidio & Renfro and Scottish firm Keppie Design, are backed by local businessman Sir Ian Wood, who is offering up to £85m towards the scheme.

But Lennox, who is from the city, said on her Facebook page that the plans were, “another dogs dinner of crap concrete development, ravaging the only authentic, historical green space in the city centre is not the solution to the challenge of re-energising and revitalising Aberdeen”.

She also criticised local councillors who support the scheme as “short sighted” and “reacting to the dangling £50m golden carrot”.

A referendum on the plans in March found popular support for the project with 45,301 voting in favour of it and 41,175 against it.
