Multdisciplinary firm Ove Arup and Partners is to design a £160m redevelopment of London's King's Cross underground station.

Design work will begin this month on the £80m first phase of the redevelopment. This will include:

  • a new western ticket hall under the forecourt of St Pancras Chambers. This will serve the Metropolitan and Circle lines and provide a public subway under Euston Road

  • large-scale refurbishment of the existing ticket hall

  • improved access for people with restricted mobility.

The first phase will start on site towards the end of 1999. The second phase – including a new ticket hall linked directly to the St Pancras International Terminus – will be carried out when the second section of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link is constructed. This is currently expected to start in 2001.

The King's Cross redevelopment is scheduled to be completed prior to the relaunch of St Pancras as an international terminal at the end of 2006.
