Balfour Beatty picks up US healthcare consultants HLM and Bombardier’s UK signalling arm.

Balfour Beatty has increased its presence in the rail signaling and US healthcare markets, with two new acquisitions. It has brought UK Solid State Interlocking (SSI) signalling resources from Bombardier Transportations, and HLM design, a Philadelphia-based design and engineering firm that specialises in healthcare projects.

HLM has been bought by Heery International, a Balfour Beatty US subsidiary that specialises in architectural, design, project and facilities management. The combined cost of the two acquisitions is approximately £5 million.

Balfour Beatty has three rail signaling companies, based in the UK, the US and in Germany; the acquisition of SSI it hopes to broaden the range of services it can offer to National Rail and other customers.
