Ballymore is bringing forward two major urban regeneration schemes following the completion of its Royal Wharf project
Property developer Ballymore has received planning permission for 1,685 new homes in Newham, east London, as part of a wider redevelopment of the north bank of the Thames.
The site at Thames Road will include 173 homes for social rent, as well as 359 co-living suites, a new primary school and 13,500sq m of light industrial and flexible workspace.
Architect Howells will design the site, known as UNEX, which will also include riverside mansion blocks, townhouses and a new park.
“Securing consent for Thames Road is a significant milestone and a strong endorsement of the ambition and care that has shaped these proposals,” said John Mulryan, group managing director at Ballymore.
“Our commitment to the Royal Docks spans decades, and this approval allows us to build on the success of Royal Wharf.”
Mulryan said construction on the site would likely begin next year. The project team includes engineers Walsh and Hoare Lea.
Ballymore submitted plans for a sister site in 2024, which would include 1,667 new homes at Knights Road, just a few minutes from Thames Road. The proposals are still waiting for a decision from Newham council.
The developer has previously completed major regeneration schemes in the Royal Docks with Oxley Holdings, such as Royal Wharf and Riverscape. These sites provided more than 4,000 new homes.
