Architect MacCormac Jamieson Prichard has won the competition to design the £120m redevelopment of the BBC’s Portland Place headquarters.

The practice beat off a shortlist including Fletcher Priest, Stanton Williams and Alsop & Störmer to win the high-profile job, first revealed in Building last month.

The corporation confirmed that the Broadcasting House project would be part of its plans to outsource its London property portfolio to the private sector.

A BBC statement said MacCormac Jamieson Prichard was picked because of its sympathetic approach to the location and its understanding of the corporation’s business needs.

John Smith, the BBC’s director of finance property and business affairs, said: “This is a tough brief. We believe MJP can rise to the challenge – a 21st-century BBC in a historic setting.”

The brief includes making the best use of space in Broadcasting House and redeveloping adjacent buildings, and including finding ways of opening up the site to the public.
