The 1 million ft2 Silverburn shopping centre will be some 400,000 ft2 larger than any shopping centre the country has seen before,

The £350m Silverburn shopping mall is set to become the biggest in Scotland when it is built on the south side of Glasgow.

The 1 million ft2 development will be some 400,000 ft2 larger than any shopping centre the country has seen before, and will rank fourth in terms of retail facilities behind Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen city centres.

SIlverburn is set to see the biggest Tesco in Scotland, and Marks & Spencer and Debenhams are also planning on having stores there.

When Silverburn is finished, due in October 2007, developers say it will appeal mostly to people in Glasgow's affluent south side neighbourhoods.

Sources from the nearby Braehead centre in Renfrewshire said they are not worried by the competition.
