Call for developer to take forward Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners-designed 470-home Newington Butts scheme

London Mayor Boris Johnson has called on developers to come forward with expressions of interest to build the 470-home Newington Butts scheme in Elephant & Castle.

The landmark project, which includes a 45-storey tower and new theatre, has been designed by architect Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, and is part of the area’s wider regeneration programme.

Johnson said the scheme would be central to the renaissance of the South London district, and that potential developers for the 0.49 hectare site could now step up to the mark.

“This project will play a key role in our plans to release public land to boost construction, create jobs and provide homes for working Londoners,” he said.

“It will be central to helping Elephant & Castle realise its enormous potential for growth and regeneration and so I’m delighted to ask developers to step forward and make it happen.

“We’re looking for a developer with the know-how, financial clout and the ambition that this fantastic project deserves and that will help to make this historic part of London an even better place to live, work and visit.”

Southwark Council leader Peter John said momentum was “returning” to the Elephant and Castle regeneration and t hat he looked forward to proposals coming forward.

Newington Butts is one of a number of major developments planned for Elephant and Castle, including the Heygate Estate regeneration, Elephant & Castle Leisure Centre, Oakmayne Plaza and a new shopping centre.
